Beat Austin Heat: Cool, Calm Places to Take Babies & Toddlers This Summer

Baby playing at a splash pad
Nothing like a cool splash of water when the heat reaches the 100s! And Austin is leveling up the game this year with freshly remodeled splash pads!

Surviving an Austin summer with a baby is its own sport.

By June, “go outside and play” stops being free advice and starts being a heat advisory. The car seat is somehow lava. The playground equipment could fry an egg. And a toddler who doesn’t burn off energy by 10am is a toddler who will find other uses for that energy.

But here’s the good news: you are not alone, and Austin is actually packed with secret pockets of relief. If you're currently sweating through your third shirt of the day, here is our ultimate, battle-tested guide to the best splash pads, pools, and shade in town (most of them totally free)

Free splash pads (and the best for little ones)

All 11 City of Austin splash pads are free, require zero reservations, and run from May 1 through October 31. (The beloved Liz Carpenter pad at Butler Park is the unicorn that stays open year-round).

If you are dealing with a baby or a brand-new walker, these four are the gentlest on your nervous system:

Summer at the Ricky Guerrero Splash Pad! Kids cool off beneath playful water features at one of Austin's best splash pads for families. It's the perfect spot for toddlers and young children to splash, play, and beat the Texas heat.

  • Ricky Guerrero (1100 Brodie St.) - a local favorite for the littlest ones: lots of shade, and a low wall around most of the pad that helps keep new walkers contained.

  • Clarksville (1811 W. 11th St.) - central, with shade sails over part of the pad and rainbow arches the kids love.

  • Liz Carpenter at Butler Park (1000 Barton Springs Rd.) - plenty of seating so you can keep watch comfortably, a downtown skyline view, and it’s open year-round.

Pro-Tips: Go early. If you aren't there by 9:30 AM, you're fighting for parking and losing the shade. Pack water shoes for slippery new walkers, and bring way more sunscreen than feels reasonable. (Always check the City of Austin aquatics page before you load up, just in case of maintenance!).

People swimming at Deep Eddy Pool
Summer at Deep Eddy Pool!  one of Austin’s best cool spots for summer. This historic spring-fed pool is perfect for swimming, relaxing, and beating the Texas heat with crystal-clear, refreshing water in the heart of the city.

Cool pools for the smallest swimmers

When a splash pad won't cut it, it's time to submerge.

Deep Eddy is hands-down the gentlest option for babies. Its gradual, beach-like shallow entry means you can sit in the water with your baby on your lap without being chest-deep.

Bartholomew Pool Features a brilliant, fully-shaded toddler area equipped with a mini slide that will keep an older toddler busy for hours.

Note: Both charge a tiny entry fee (around $5 for adults), and both get packed on weekends. Arrive early to snag a shaded patch of grass.

A mommy and me walk through Pease Park in Austin, Texas — a peaceful green space perfect for family walks, outdoor time, and enjoying nature in the city. A calm urban park with trails, shade, and open areas ideal for kids and adults.

When you want shade and a little adventure

  • Pease Park is beautiful, deeply shaded, and incredibly stroller-friendly along Shoal Creek. It's the ultimate spot to walk off the morning crankiness while the baby naps in the shade.

  • Barton Springs is a classic for a reason. At a crisp 68–70°F year-round, it’s a shock to the system in the best way possible. Just wear water shoes, those natural rock entries get slippery.

  • Krause Springs if you got a triple-digit day with no end in sight. Pack the diaper bag and drive 40 minutes out to this Hill Country oasis. It is pure magic.

Kids enjoying a quiet indoor space at a library with air conditioning
Toddlers enjoy a quiet indoor space at a library with air conditioning — a perfect cool escape for summer days.

Indoor escapes for peak heat (10am - 5pm)

Some days, the only sane, responsible parenting choice is heavy-duty air conditioning.

Your local Austin Public Library branch is an underrated goldmine. It’s free, freezing cold, and almost all of them host baby and toddler storytimes. Honestly, it’s the best place in town to lock eyes with another tired parent and realize you’re in this together. For older toddlers with walls to bounce off of, The Thinkery is a good option, though it can get chaotic on hot weekends. (tip: bring hand sanitizer wipes!)

What we couldn’t find - so we’re building it

Here’s the gap we kept running into: an indoor place that’s cool, calm, genuinely safe for babies and new walkers, and designed so the grown-up gets to sit down too. Most indoor options are loud, built for big-kid energy, not very well cleaned and leave you standing the whole time.

So we’re building it.

The Baby Café is a boutique, thoughtfully curated space opening in Austin this summer - where your little one can safely play and explore within sight while you enjoy a cold brew, an agua fresca, or a smoothie and actually catch your breath. Cool, calm, and made for this exact season of life.
